This
screenshot shows the Compass Sport subscription page. The Actinic
shop contains many books, publications and maps in a 'standard'
online catalogue format but for the subscription page the layout
was altered to reflect the different nature of a subscription
to a purchase.
The
subscription terms are clearly laid out and the costs have been
customised to provide a discount to individuals who are members
of the National Orienteering Federation; similar discounts could
be offered to valued customers or registered site users. A direct-debit
mandate is available for download along with standard online payment
options of credit-card, debit-card and cheque.

The
Trade Online Project is a straightforward walkthrough of how
things can be achieved on the Internet using entry-level solutions
available
to everyone. The web is based on information but that does not
mean that with proper planning an information site has to give
away the value of its content.
Alternative
models for a publishing site include electronic downloads of
journals based on a subscription or one-off charge; a members
area where
content is available after registration and fee payment or even
a paid for search function common on science and national publication
sites.
The
next page has details of the costs and outcomes achieved by the
Compass Sport Trade Online Project.
